The Concept of Healthy Lifestyle

The concept of healthy lifestyle refers to a combination of practices and activities engaged by individuals to keep their bodies sound and healthy. Some of the activities and practices that contribute to an individual being well in their body, mind and free from diseases include regular exercises, maintain personal hygiene, keeping clean and tidy environment, ensuring internal cleansing and eating balanced diet.

A healthy life is consciously created and lived. There is therefore the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. These include:

i. It strengthens the immune system

ii. Healthy lifestyle makes one look younger

iii. It also contributes to good health.

iv. Regular exercises facilitate proper blood circulation.

Maintaining Health Through Good Relationship

(i) Approaches to positive thinking: This refers to the ability of the individual to think positively and take decisions independently.


(ii) How one could be helpful to neighbors: This involves showing care, empathizing with others and providing neighbors with the support they need to learn to live friendly and peacefully with people around you. Support people with money, food, clothing and even words of encouragement.


(iii) Ways of maintaining conducive environment:  This does not only refer to keeping or creating a peaceful atmosphere at home but also keeping the environment clean and tidy.


(iv) Effective communication: Effective communication is another basic rule of maintaining good relationship. It strengthens psychological and emotional ties that unite a family. It also makes it possible for individuals to express their opinions or speak their mind with confidence and at the same time are sensitive to other people's viewpoints or opinions.


(v) Have empathy: Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Empathy helps in maintaining good relationship in the sense that it helps us understand what someone else is experiencing or going through in his life. It therefore helps us to be sensitive to other peoples' needs.


(vi) Cooperation/teamwork: This is working with others for the good of all. This can be achieved by:

a. Performing your share or part of the tasks

b. Willing to incorporate other people's ideas and plans into yours

c. Be willing to perform difficult tasks

 

(vii) Be accepting: Every individual is different in terms of how they understand and do things. This does not make them inferior. You can learn from them, appreciate them and do not reject them.


(vii) Working with people: Establish cordial and peaceful relationship between you and your working colleagues.


(v) Franking stating personal weakness and strength: Do not pretend to know it all. Identify things you cannot do and take time to learn, whilst increasing your commitment to those things you can do better or very well.

 

Maintaining Healthy Body Weight

(i) Effect of body weight: Overweight and underweight increases your chances of developing health problems. Weight management can help an individual avoid the health risks of overweight and underweight. It helps keep the body at acceptable levels of between 18.2 to 25kg/m2.

(ii) Measuring and recording height, weight and waist circumference: This will help the individual know whether he is losing or gaining weight.

(iii) Calculate and interpret Body Mass Index (BMI) and other indicators of obesity: Formula for calculating Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is equal to weight divided by height squared

(iv) Exercises that contribute to good health: Exercises are very important for body fitness. There are many types of exercises, some can be focused on certain parts of the body, such as waist, arms and abdomen. Examples of

games like football, etc. No matter your age or fitness level, these activities can help you get in shape and lower your risk for disease.

(v) Maintaining health through relaxation (relieving stress): Rest is the act of relaxing either by sitting or lying down. During rest the mind and muscles are relaxed. Relaxation is a   process that decreases the effects of stress on your mind and body. Relaxation techniques can therefore help you cope with everyday stress and with stress related to various health problems, such as heart diseases and pain.

(vi) Benefit of rest and sleep: Energy is built up for future use, muscles relax, it is the cure for fatigue or tiredness, it makes you look and feel better, and it gives you the energy you need during the day. Sleep is also involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk   of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke.

(vii) Methods of relaxation and stress management: Loosen all tight clothing, maintain good sleeping posture, ensure that the environment is less noisy and well ventilated, your bed and mattress should be smooth, firm, comfortable and clean.

(viii) Checking on the diet: The type of food eaten or taken into the body, the quantity and time taken counts a lot with regards to health maintenance and body weight.
